Work on the streetlights is expected to conclude this fall.

Madison, Indiana (July 26, 2023) – Duke Energy has begun converting more than 800 streetlights across the city of Madison to LEDs (light-emitting diodes). The new, energy-efficient lights will replace old light fixtures through a rebate program, resulting in significant energy and cost savings for the city.

"This project simultaneously falls into our greater mission of elevating the quality of life here in Madison while improving community safety for every resident and visitor," said Madison's Mayor, Bob Courtney. "We appreciate Duke Energy’s Energy Efficiency LED Rebate Program that made this project possible.”

The new LED streetlights will comply with current federal lighting standards, are safer for traffic, reduce energy use, have a longer life span, and are more affordable to maintain than the mercury vapor and metal halide fixtures around Madison.

The project began in early June and is projected to reduce annual electric costs by 40%, saving the city on average $43,000 per year. “Bringing efficiency to city operations is a top priority. These savings will allow the city to leverage even more investments in streets, sidewalks and parks,” said Mayor Courtney.

“Energy-efficient outdoor lighting not only provides positive environmental benefits for our customers, but also significant cost savings,” said Lisa Huber, government and community relations manager at Duke Energy. “We worked with Mayor Courtney to bring this streetlight conversion project to fruition and look forward to our continued work with the city to deliver electric grid enhancements that will benefit the community.”

Work on the streetlights is expected to conclude this fall. Please be mindful of the Duke Energy crews working their way across the city throughout the summer.
